The Denis Hurley Association UK

Dr Liz Reynolds (back row, first from left) and Dr Hannah Roberts (front row, second from left) are seen with the other staff and volunteers at the Denis Hurley Centre clinic. The two young doctors have been among several skilled volunteers from the UK who have given their time to work with us to help tend the needs of some of the poorest people in Durban.

The Denis Hurley Association UK (reg: 1146106) was launched formally in 2012 at Archbishop’s House, Westminster, with the support of Cardinal Vincent Nichols.

Thanks to the help of generous UK supporters, we have raised  (to December 2025) almost £400,000 (which translates to more than R7.4 million): initially for the construction and fitting of the Denis Hurley Centre and then for the operations of our primary healthcare clinic.

The DHA does not maintain its own database of supporters. If you would like to receive regular updates about the work of the Denis Hurley Centre then subscribe to the DHC newsletter by emailing news@denishurleycentre.org and indicate that you are in the UK. You can unsubscribe for yourself at any time.

Our aim is to keep the vision of Denis Hurley alive, and promote and raise funds for the Denis Hurley Centre in Durban, South Africa. We are a UK registered charity (Charity registration number 1146106). Donations from UK tax-payers are eligible for Gift Aid, a government subsidy to charities worth an additional 25 per cent.

Since administrative costs are minimal, all the money raised by the Denis Hurley Association goes directly to the work of the Denis Hurley Centre. For more information on how to donate in the UK click here.

Denis Hurley dedicated his life to the poor, the abandoned and the downtrodden. Like Pope Francis, he had a vision of the church on the margins, reaching out to welcome those who are often ignored, “a community serving humanity”. He fought tirelessly for an end to apartheid, and for equality among all human beings. He was a member of the Order of Obiates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), and truly lived the words of the Oblate founder, St. Eugene de Mazenod, who called us to lead people to be “human beings first of all, then Christians, then saints.”

We continue to raise funds for the vital ongoing work of the Centre.
