Support in South Africa

Volunteering at the DHC in Durban

We are always looking for people who can support our work by volunteering in various ways. The Denis Hurley Centre in Durban is easily accessible by car straight off the N3 and with secure parking beside the Cathedral. It is also close to the major taxi routes.

  • General volunteers (individuals or groups) can help us prepare and serve food to the homeless on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.
  • Nurses or doctors can help out for a few hours at our clinic.
  • If you have other skills (in administration, fundraising, catering) or you are just not sure what you want to do, contact us.
  • Email the director  raymond@denishurleycentre.org or message 076 570 2497.

Donating in South Africa

Amazing work was done by so many individuals and communities to raise the money needed to build the Denis Hurley Centre. Now we need your help to run the programmes that we have here.

A one-off donation is very helpful. However, if you are able to make a regular donation, once a month for example, that can be invaluable in enabling us to plan our work.

We are registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO 930034301). This means that if you are a South African tax payer (corporate or individual) you can claim a tax deduction for your donation under Section 18a status. If you would like a tax certificate please reference your donation as “18a + your surname”. Then email us at Leanne@denishurleycentre.org with the details of your donation and also your South African address postal or street address. Tax certificates are usually sent out in March/ April after the end of the tax year.

1. Donate by EFT (Credit cards are discouraged as they are currently an expensive option)

The easiest way to donate is by EFT since it is safe and also minimises bank costs to you and us. EFT contributions can be made to:
Account Name: Denis Hurley Centre Trust
Account No: 6220 4261 002
Bank: First National Bank (FNB)
Branch: Durban
Branch Number: 221426

Please click the option to send us POP confirmation to admin@denishurleycentre.org so we can look out for the donation and let you know when we receive it. Remember to include your own email address for acknowledgement.

2. Donate by cash

We discourage cash donations for reasons of security but if you want to you can bring cash to the Denis Hurley Centre directly and insist on a receipt. (Please do NOT send cash by post).
We do not send out people on the streets to collect cash for the DHC and anyone claiming to be doing so is a fraud and should be reported to the police and to us.

3. Leave a Legacy

We have a programme, named in honour of our founder Paddy Kearney, whereby supporters can leave a legacy to us in their wills and we will ensure that the gift continues to benefit the DHC in perpetuity. Email raymond@denishurleycentre.org for more information.

Donating in the United Kingdom

We are delighted that a number of supporters in the UK have been so inspired by Archbishop Denis Hurley and the work of the centre that they have set up the UK-based Denis Hurley Association. This means that it is very easy to donate in the UK in sterling and for us to benefit from the Gift Aid provision so a donation of £100 becomes £125 at no cost to you. However you do need to complete and send off the Gift Aid declaration form that you can download here. You can donate in the UK in the following ways:

1. By bank transfer or direct debit:

Account Name: Denis Hurley Association
Account No: 6545 6699
Bank: The Co-operative Bank
Branch Number: 08 92 99

2. Donate online using debit/credit card using the following link:

3. By post with a cheque

Made payable to Denis Hurley Association and sent to:
The Treasurer
Denis Hurley Association
Denis Hurley House
14 Quex Road
London NW6 4PL

The opening of Denis Hurley House in North London by Fr. William Fitzpatrick (OMI Provincial), Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Mildred Neville (founder of CIIR/ Progressio) and Bishop David Konstant.

Donating from elsewhere

If you are somewhere other than South Africa or the UK, and would like to donate, please consult directly with your bank as to the specifics of international transfer applicable to your country.

South African banks do not make use of the IBAN system (International Banking Account Number) but rather the SWIFT system (Society for Worldwide International Financial Telecommunications).

SWIFT transactions draw a bank fee for both donor and recipient. At the point of transaction, you will have a choice of charge options.

  • Selecting OUR will result in you absorbing both banks’ fees.
  • Selecting SHA or BEN will result in you being charged your bank’s fee only, and we will be charged our bank’s fee.

In order to make a SWIFT transaction, you will need our SWIFT code and our bank account number.

Our details are as follows:

  •  SWIFT Code: FIRNZAJJ
  • Bank: First National Bank (FNB)
  • Account Number: 62204261002
  • Account Name: Denis Hurley Centre
  • Branch Code: 222126

Please note that the South African banking system does not make use of IBAN numbers,  so only the SWIFT code is necessary.

OR use PayFast to donate any amount via debit/credit card or EFT (though note that charges are deducted by PayFast from your donation).

Please email leanne@denishurleycentre.org if confirmation of DHC banking details is required.
